The Composer Layer
Why Cursor's Composer 2.5 is a market-structure chart, not a benchmark chart
The most important AI fight right now is no longer simply OpenAI vs Anthropic vs Google vs xAI.
It is also frontier models vs the layer being built on top of them.
That is what the latest Composer 2.5 chart makes visible.
At first glance it looks like a benchmark story: another plot of model quality versus cost, another round of bragging rights in coding, another attempt to claim parity with the best closed labs.
That is the surface-level read.
The deeper read is more consequential:
the center of gravity in AI value creation is starting to move upward from the base model into the composer layer.
Not away from frontier labs entirely. But away from the assumption that owning the best general-purpose model is the only place where durable value can accrue.
That assumption is now breaking.
